Katja Schenker by Claudia Klein
Katja Schenker, born in St Gallen, Switzerland, studied comparative literature, art history and philosophy at the University of Zurich and the Ecole Superieure des Social Sciences in France. She now lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. Her art is mainly created through multi-media, such as performance, installation and sculpture. She focuses on the multi-dimensional relationship between natural environment and architectural space, body action and material processing, and strengthens the transience and durability in the process of material energy transformation. Particular emphasis is placed on the perception and experience of the interaction between the artist, the work and the audience.
This time, Katja Schenker was invited to hold a solo exhibition in the Yalu River Art Museum. She studied the site, collected and researched relevant information, and spent a month on the exhibition site to create several pieces of flexible metal mesh of 7 meters by 10 meters. On the meshes, some unique products of Dandong, such as driftwood from the Yalu River, shells, tussah silk and fishing nets, as well as materials such as magnetic ore, gypsum and cement, are put up. Then the metal meshes are extruded and collided with the body of the self to make it deform, forming a tension between the individual behavior and the metal meshes.

When the weak body interacts with the tough metal meshes, the body leaves deep impressions in the metal meshes, resulting in the undulating shape of the metal meshes, and even highlighting a kind of twisted perversity.

Symbolically, it corresponds to her confrontational attitude towards the restrictions, barriers and boundaries of reality, as well as her status situation, or it is also a true portrayal of her living situation. It is not only her certainty of her own existence, but also the direct, homespun power of the work itself.
